YOUR (FIRST) WINTER WITH YOUR BABY
Spending the winter with your baby can be very exciting, especially if it is your first winter with your baby. Of course, you care much more about whether your baby is not too cold, whether there is a flu threatening him and what types of sweaters, jackets and other winter clothes you should take with you on the road. Not only in terms of clothing and temperature, but also in terms of baby's skin, there are a number of things to know to spend the winter months as pleasantly as possible with your baby!
TIPS FOR THE WINTER MONTHS WITH YOUR BABY
- Caring for and protecting baby's skin
During the winter months, your baby's skin needs a little more care and attention. This is due to the cold and freezing air outside and the dry air inside due to heating. The skin can then become dry, reddish or itchy. So make sure to rub your baby's skin once a day with a greasy and moisturizing baby oil that is safe for baby's skin. Does your baby suffer from very dry skin? Then it is best to apply it several times a day. If you are concerned about your baby's dry skin, it is best to contact your doctor. Try not to wash your baby in water that is too hot, and not every day, as this can also dry out baby's skin. Here you can read more about caring for baby's skin in winter and autumn.
- Layers of clothing
Since you often go from the cold winter outside to the warmth of the stove inside with your baby in winter, it is useful to always wear different layers of clothing and take them with you. This way you can always maintain a comfortable body temperature for your baby and he never needs to be too cold or too hot. Try to dress your child in breathable materials, so that he is not dressed in wool from head to toe, which could make him too hot.
- Take off your coat in the car!
It may seem natural to leave your baby's winter coat in the car, but you may want to take it off. When wearing a winter coat, the belts are not properly adjusted, which means that the space between the body and the belt is effectively too large. Your baby may still not be properly secured in the car. It is therefore preferable to adjust the belt to the body and remove the thick winter coat for a moment. It may be nice to heat the car in advance or use a blanket once your child is sitting in the seat.
- Carry your baby
If you go out with your baby, you can of course put him in the stroller, but you can also carry your baby in a sling or baby carrier. This way, your child stays nice and warm thanks to the heat of your body, and it's very comfortable for both! Ideal if you go for a winter walk outside with your child to keep your baby warm.
- Blankets and covers for the stroller?
Just like in summer, it's also important in winter that your baby can continue to breathe freely in the stroller. Even if it's cold, it's not a good idea to completely cover the stroller with a blanket or cloth. Always make sure your baby can get fresh air and use covers specifically designed for the stroller. Place your child in the stroller with their coat, scarf, hat, and gloves, with a blanket up to their chest.
- Temperature in the house
The temperature in your house shouldn't be too hot or too cold. So, don't turn up the heating too high, as this could dry out your baby's skin. The ideal temperature for your home is between 20 and 22 degrees. In the baby's room, the ideal sleeping temperature for your baby is 20 degrees up to 8 weeks, then 16 to 18 degrees. Consider the TOG value of your baby's bedding.
- Good hygiene
During the winter months, a flu or cold is, of course, much more likely to occur. Good hygiene for the whole family is very important: wash your hands often, avoid other sick children, and dress your child warmly when you go out.
