Which travel crib is best for which season?

Most buying guides treat a travel cot as if you use it the same way all year round. In reality, your needs vary greatly depending on the season.

Summer: Shade and Ventilation

In the summer, heat is the problem, not cold. You want a crib that allows air to circulate and that you can place in the shade. Pay attention to the fabric’s UV rating if it’s set up outdoors, and choose a mattress that allows air to circulate rather than trapping heat.

Spring and Fall: Drafts and Dampness

These are the toughest seasons. It’s pleasant during the day, but it cools off significantly at night, and at a campground or in a vacation home, humidity adds to the challenge. Dress in layers and don’t place the crib directly on a cold floor; using a bed riser or an extra mat underneath makes a noticeable difference.

Winter: indoors, but not near the heater

In the winter, the crib is almost always kept indoors. The biggest mistake is placing it too close to a radiator or heater. That dries out the crib and causes significant temperature differences between the head and foot ends.

What Matters in Every Season

A mattress that fits perfectly and a sheet that’s just the right size. That doesn’t change with the weather. You can read more about that mattress in “Which Mattress Should You Choose for a Camping Bed?”

One crib for the whole year

You don't have to buy something different every season. Choose a crib with UV protection and a breathable mesh for the summer, and stay warm during the colder months with bedding and a mattress riser. Both the Baby Luxe and Peuter Luxe are designed with this in mind.
