7 Tips to get through the winter with your baby

THE (FIRST) WINTER WITH YOUR BABY

Getting through the winter with your baby can be quite exciting, especially if it's the first winter with your baby. Naturally, you are much more concerned with whether your baby is too cold, whether there is a lurking flu, and what all you need to bring on the road in sweaters, coats and other winter clothing. Not only in terms of clothing and temperature, but also in terms of baby's skin, there are a few things you need to know to get through the winter months with your baby as nicely as possible!

TIPS FOR THE WINTER MONTHS WITH YOUR BABY

  1. Caring for and protecting baby's skin

During the winter months, your baby's skin needs just a little more care and attention. This is because of the cold, icy air outside and the dry air indoors due to heating. The skin can then become dry, red or itchy as a result. So be sure to rub your baby's skin once a day with an oily, moisturizing baby oil that is safe for baby's skin. Does your baby suffer from very dry skin? Then it's okay to apply several times a day. If you are concerned about your baby's dry skin, it is best to contact your doctor. Try not to wash your baby in too hot water, nor every day, as this can also cause dry baby skin. Read more about baby skin care in winter and autumn here.

  1. Layers of clothing

Because you will be switching a lot from the cold winter cold outside to stove heat inside with your baby in the winter, it is helpful to always put on and carry several layers of clothing. That way you can always keep your baby's body temperature comfortable and she or he never has to get too cold or too hot. Do try to dress your baby with breathable materials, so that your non-baby is not dressed from head to toe in wool that can make them too hot.

  1. Coat off in the car!

It may feel natural to leave your baby's winter coat on in the car, but it's still better to take it off. This is because with a winter coat on, the seat belts are not properly adjusted, so the space between body and seat belt is actually too large. Your baby can still not be properly secured in the car. It is better to adjust the harness to the body and take off the thick winter coat. It may be nice to warm the car in advance, or use a blanket once your child is in the seat.

  1. Carry your baby

When you go out with your baby, you can of course put him or her in the stroller, but you can also carry your baby in a sling or baby carrier. This way, your baby stays nice and warm with your body heat, and it's great fun for both of them! Ideal if you are going for a winter walk with your child outside to keep your baby warm anyway.

  1. Blankets and covers for the stroller?

As in the summer, it is also important in the winter that your baby can continue to breathe freely in the stroller. So even though it is cold, it is not a good idea to completely cover the stroller with a blanket or cloth. Always make sure your baby can get fresh air and use covers specifically designed for the stroller. Put your baby in his jacket, scarf, hat and gloves in the stroller with a blanket over him up to chest height.

  1. Temperature in the house

The temperature in the house should be neither too hot nor too cold. So don't turn the heating up too high, as this can give your baby dry skin. The ideal temperature for inside the house is between 20 and 22 degrees. In the baby room, the ideal temperature for your baby to sleep is 20 degrees up to 8 weeks, then 16 to 18 degrees. Keep in mind the TOG value of your baby's sleep textiles.

  1. Good hygiene

During the winter months, the likelihood of catching a cold is naturally much greater. Good hygiene for the whole family is then very important: wash hands a lot, avoid other sick children and dress your child well when you go outside.
