Going to the beach with a baby: what should you bring?

For a baby, the beach can be especially bright and hot. With some shade, shelter, and a place to sleep, it’s a great day.

A shadow that moves with me

The sun moves across the sky, so a fixed umbrella only provides shade for part of the day. A beach tent or pop-up canopy with a UV-protective cover provides both shade and protection from the wind and sand.

Limit the hours

UV radiation is strongest between noon and 3:00 p.m. Go early or late—it’ll be less crowded then, too. See UV protection for babies.

Sand is part of it

Using a large towel as a "sand island" works better than trying to keep everything sand-free. Bring extra water to rinse your hands and face.
