Autumn activities with a young child

Autumn Activities with a Toddler

It's starting to get colder again, which means autumn is just around the corner. You may be wondering how to keep your child busy now that it's becoming less attractive to play outdoors. Even though the weather can be a bit unpredictable, that doesn't mean you can't go outside anymore. Autumn still offers many opportunities for fun outdoor activities with your little one. In this blog, we share six activities for both beautiful and rainy autumn days with your child.

  1. Cycling together
If it's not raining, it's wonderful to cycle together. Enjoy some fresh air while your little one admires the surroundings from a bicycle seat. This is a perfect time to talk together or plan an outing. When it's a little colder, a footmuff can provide extra warmth for your child.

  2. Forest walk
Autumn brings beautiful changes in the forest, such as colored leaves, mushrooms, and falling leaves. The forest becomes a new world of discovery for your child. Take a walk together and enjoy nature. Don't forget to bring rain boots in case it has rained so your little one can jump in the puddles. If you don't have much time, you can also bring a stroller.

  3. Collect new toys
In autumn, the forests are full of cones, acorns, and chestnuts. Bring a bag and let your child collect all these beautiful finds. Children have a vivid imagination, so for them, this is just as fun as a new toy. When your child is done with it, the collected treasures can easily be placed in the green container or used for craft projects.

  4. Crafts
Your child can create beautiful works of art with pine cones, acorns, chestnuts, leaves and craft supplies such as (finger) paint. Inspiration can be found on Pinterest, but you can also let your little one design freely.

  5. Autumn scavenger hunt
Print out some pictures of typical autumn items found in nature and laminate them if needed. Search together with your child for everything in the pictures. If your child is still developing their speech, you can also use the pictures to learn new words. It's a fun and educational activity.

  6. Baking together
What could be better than watching a movie under a blanket on the couch on a rainy day? This can be even better if you bake something together with your child. Decorating the baked goods stimulates your child's creative brain and fine motor skills. It is a fun and tasty activity.

With these tips, you don't have to worry about long autumn days with an active child. Whether you're indoors or outdoors, there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy. An additional benefit is that it's healthy for your child to play outdoors all year round.
