Road Trip with Kids: How to Plan Your Driving Days
It's not the distance that matters, but how you break up the day's ride.
When traveling with children, the fastest route is rarely the most enjoyable. It's not about the distance, but about how you break up the day.
Leave early or late—not somewhere in between
Driving during your sleep cycle works best: early in the morning or in the early evening. Setting out in the middle of the day causes the most restlessness.
Plan breaks based on activity, not on time
A ten-minute break at a gas station doesn't do much. Half an hour at a playground or on a lawn keeps you going until the next leg of the trip.
Keep the lights on for the last two hours
Plan the last leg of the trip without any set plans, so that an extra stop isn't a problem. Arriving relaxed in the car makes all the difference on the first night.
