Outdoor Play with a Toddler: Ideas by Season
What works for each season, without having to lug around a bag full of toys.
Between those first steps and toddlerhood, outdoor play changes every month. A toddler is all about exploring: grabbing, throwing, climbing, and knocking things over again. You don’t need much to do that.
Spring
Mud, puddles, and branches are plenty. Let your child decide where the walk goes; the pace is slow, but that’s exactly what they’re practicing right now. Packing a change of clothes in the bag saves you from having to argue.
Summer
Playing with water is the best activity all summer long: a tub, a bucket, a garden hose. Be mindful of shade and the times when the sun is at its strongest. Taking a break in the shade works better than pushing through until things go wrong.
Fall
Collecting leaves, picking up chestnuts, jumping in piles. This is the season when a toddler learns to sort and collect, and it doesn't cost a penny.
Winter
Short walks are better than one long one. The cold is less of a problem than standing still; keep moving and make sure your hands and feet stay dry.
